How to choose an electric shaver that won't let you down

Pay attention to these features and avoid overpaying for unnecessary functions.

Decide on the type of shaver

One of the key features of an electric shaver is the design of the heads with blades that cut the hair. There are rotary and foil models.

In the former, several heads are used, each with a disc with holes beneath which the blades rotate. The main advantage of this type is its efficiency with short stubble, although it can cause irritation on sensitive skin.

In foil shavers, the blades are covered by a foil (as the name suggests). The cutting elements do not rotate but move side to side. This type is more suitable for long beards and mustaches and generally causes less irritation than rotary systems.

It’s important to note that manufacturers have made great progress, so high-quality rotary shavers no longer irritate the skin as much, while foil shavers are effective even with short stubble.

Learn about the shaving heads

Rotary models generally have three shaving heads, although they can have between two and five, excluding very exotic devices. In foil shavers, the number of heads varies from one to five.

The more heads there are, the larger the shaving area. That is, large models with 4 or 5 heads help remove facial hair faster. However, these devices are harder to carry on a trip and less practical for working on small details if you don’t plan to shave your beard completely.

The heads can be fixed or floating. In the latter case, the system adapts to the surface and fits better to the skin, increasing the cutting efficiency.

Currently, devices with floating heads are more common. In many models, not only do the blades move, but the entire upper block of the shaver adapts to the shape of the face, improving the quality and comfort of shaving.

Understand shaving methods and modes

When buying, consider whether you will use the shaver only for dry shaving or if you will also use it with creams in a steamy bathroom. For example, during trips, it may not always be possible to perform a full shave with steam and special beard products.

Of course, if the shaver is suitable for wet shaving, it will also work for dry shaving. A waterproof model is easier to clean: simply rinse it under the tap. Otherwise, trapped hairs will need to be removed with a brush.

The shaver can operate in different modes. In addition to the standard one, options for sensitive skin and a turbo mode for maximum shaving speed are often included. Additionally, some manufacturers add ultrasonic vibrations that help the mechanism better adapt to the contours of the face and the condition of the beard.

Evaluate the design and body materials

When buying an electric shaver, inspect the blades. Metal ones should show no signs of rust and should fit tightly to the base of the shaving head.

Ceramic blades should only be checked for integrity. They don’t rust, are as effective as metal ones, but dull faster. Sharpening them yourself can be quite complicated.

The body of the shaver is usually made entirely of plastic, although more expensive models use metal inserts to increase rigidity. Check the shaver for cracks and visible gaps.

A textured plastic or rubber insert reduces the device’s slippage in the hand. This is important for wet shaving, and it’s better to avoid models without this element.

Learn about the device’s power supply

Battery-powered shavers are undoubtedly more convenient. You won’t have to constantly look for a socket. Wireless models dominate stores, but first, you need to determine which type of battery is best.

The battery can be nickel-cadmium (NiCD), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), or lithium-ion (Li-Ion). Nickel-cadmium batteries are inexpensive and charge quickly but have a memory effect. If recharged without being fully discharged, they will discharge to that level the next time. However, many shavers indicate when they need to be recharged.

For the other types of batteries, this memory effect is less pronounced or non-existent. Lithium-ion batteries are the most advanced and expensive.

There are also models that run on AA batteries, which need to be replaced regularly. They are useful when it’s not possible to recharge the battery.

It is recommended that the shaver have a charge indicator. This is useful when shaving away from home. The device can be charged via a USB cable or a charging dock, which also serves as a stand.

For models that operate with a cord, there are no additional important features except for the cord length. The longer it is, the easier it is to find a suitable socket and use the bathroom mirror.

Consider additional features

Some shavers include a reservoir for lotion or moisturizing gel. During shaving, this is automatically applied to the skin, reducing irritation. This feature is characteristic of premium models.

Additionally, the shaver may feature automatic cleaning through a charging dock with a disinfectant liquid reservoir. This feature is also found in high-end devices. The disinfectant reservoir can be purchased separately, allowing significant savings.

Many current models have a small screen that shows the charge level, the selected shaving mode, and cleaning alerts. Premium shavers may include a sensor to determine hair density, allowing the device to automatically adjust blade speed for different areas of the beard.
